He is best known for his work on the original Star Wars trilogy, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He has also worked on films such as Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, and The Avengers. Dykstra was born in Long Beach, California, and attended California State University, Long Beach. He began his career in the visual effects industry in the late 1960s, working on films such as The Andromeda Strain and Silent Running. In 1977, Dykstra was hired by George Lucas to work on the visual effects for Star Wars. He was the co-founder of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the visual effects company that Lucas founded to work on the film. Dykstra won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on the film. Dykstra has since worked on a number of other films, including Spider-Man 2, Batman Begins, and The Avengers.
